If you find yourself in Honolulu and craving a delicious, hearty lunch, look no further than the aptly named Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii. Nestled at 111 Sand Island Access Rd, this charming box lunch restaurant is a hidden gem where you can indulge in a delightful array of Hawaiian-style comfort food.

The moment you step into Lunch Box Kitchen, you're greeted by a casual, utilitarian atmosphere. It's not a place for pretentious dining; instead, it has a friendly vibe that feels reminiscent of a home kitchen where the aroma of cooking fills the air. Patrons often describe it as a workman's lunch spot, but don't let that fool you—what's served here is anything but ordinary.

The menu offers a well-rounded selection of plate lunches that exemplify the best of Hawaiian cuisine. Some crowd favorites include the Oyako Don (US$11.50), where tender chicken meets softly cooked eggs atop a bed of fluffy rice, all drenched in a savory sauce that is simply irresistible. For those who love a crunch, the Chicken Katsu (US$12.00) features juicy chicken enveloped in a crispy coating, served with a side of tangy dipping sauce. If you're looking for something more substantial, the Katsu Don (US$13.00) offers a delicious twist that combines the goodness of katsu with a delightful egg and rice mix.

The restaurant’s signature Mochiko Chicken is a must-try, winning accolades from diners like S. Marie, who proclaims it as the "BEST MOCHICKO CHICKEN EVER." Each piece is incredibly tender and bursting with flavor, available in mild or spicy for those who enjoy a little kick. For a flavorful side, don’t miss out on the Mac Salad (US$2.50) which complements each dish perfectly with its creamy richness.

One aspect to keep in mind is that Lunch Box Kitchen operates on a cash-only basis, so plan accordingly. However, there’s an ATM conveniently located next door, making it easy for you to grab your favorite meal without a hitch. Many regulars recommend phoning in your order ahead of time, especially during busy hours, as favorites can sell out quickly. Customers have praised the owner and staff for their warmth and hospitality, adding to the homey feel of the restaurant.

With such high praise, it’s no wonder locals like Chee Ryu and Tracy Flores consistently return to Lunch Box Kitchen. Ryu enthuses about the variety of bentos available, such as the delicious Konbu Musubi paired with succulent lunch box options, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Meanwhile, Tracy loves ordering breakfast, convinced that the chefs whip up dishes that are no less than gourmet.

In a city rich with dining options, the Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii offers an unforgettable culinary experience that combines the flavors of Hawaii with the comfort of a homemade meal. So, next time you’re near Sand Island, treat yourself and grab a delightful box lunch that’s sure to satisfy your cravings!

Very utilitarian workman's lunch-spot-by-the-docks. Definitely above average plate lunches. (I got oyako don with mac salad, they were both 10/10)

Konbu musubi with mochiko chicken bento (lunch box), bento “f” (spam, hotdog, teri beef, mochiko chicken) my favorite, grilled salmon plate, Teri beef plate all ono (delicious). I recommend phoning in your order because the food is so good they do sell out. Also, it’s cash only here.

This time around I had to quickly get some breakfast for my man I ordered him the deluxe omelette with fried rice I already knew this place was good and I'll always choose this place over the other plate lunch places along this area Cash only & favorably there is an ATM right next door should you not have any I really believe that the people that own or cook for this place must be trained chefs because the food is always good! I still believe and wanted to emphasize that the fried chicken here is so Ono, the flavor & crispiness is unlike any other place I've tried

This is by far the BEST MOCHICKO CHICKEN EVER!!!!!!! The chicken is tender and soft AND you get to choose between mild or spicy. In the early mornings, they have bento’s pre-made so that it’s easier to grab and go but when they run out, you can always get a fresh one made to order in house. They accept cash only and offer catering and phone orders. This place is location in the industrial area on sand island. I also ordered a hamburger steak plate and I absolutely love that their hamburger patty is homemade. Homemade is always the best way to go. Their patty was soft and juicy and so flavorful. Their mac salad comes with every plate you order and it’s hands down the best mac salad I ever had Give this place a try!

Best food around!! We got breakfast one day and lunch another, and we loved it all. The food is fresh and delicious. The prices are great. Troy and Tina are super kind and friendly. When we can get back to Hawaii again, we will be eating here as much as possible lol! Thank you, from your new fish farming friends in Utah.

Went on a Saturday, which had a limited menu. I will be back to try the rest of the menu. Ordered 2 bentos with spicy mochiko chicken, teri beef, small piece Redondo hotdog, spam. 1 spicy mochiko chicken with musubi bento. They gave us 3 free mac salad. Appreciated it!!! The chicken was flavorful. It was all good. I highly recommend this place. Wish had mayo in the tuna gobo.

This place was highly recommended from a friend of mines so I was very anxious to give this place a try. I ordered bento G which came with 2 scoops of white rice, a huge piece of mochicko chicken (which they’re known for) and they cut up in slices, and a few pieces of edamame. The mochicko chicken is by far the best chicken I ever had. It’s tender and juicy and so full of flavor. The best part is that you can choose either spicy or mild and it’s fried to perfection. I also ordered a loco moco. I’ve been on a hunt for the best loco moco here on oahu, and theirs is top-notch! I love that it’s made with a homemade patty. I ordered it with an over easy egg which was also cooked perfectly, where the yolk runs over. Their gravy is light brown and very tasty. I highly recommend this place.
